Hike on your own, or join us on a private guided tour and hear stories about the Viking Age and the Slave Cliff (Trælanípan) where disobedient slaves were pushed off the mountain straight to their death. How life used to be on this island, using peat for burning and cooking and stories and legends about the Nix and old tales about hidden people and witches.

    With the local guide, you’ll receive an excellent explanation of the area’s nature and history, and you may also have the opportunity to take alternative routes that are less commonly used.

  • All bookings for Hiking with local guide require a minimum order of five persons.
    If your group consists of fewer than five people, you are still welcome to book — however, the price will be based on five persons.

  • Follow marked trails and enjoy the freedom to explore nature at your own pace.

    All visitors can learn about the hiking route from a large map and informative display at the starting point. You can also scan the QR code on your ticket to watch a video with detailed hiking information.

    Booking & Payment

    • No advance booking is necessary. Just show up and pay at the coffee shop before starting your hike.

    • Payment options: Credit card or cash accepted.

    • If you're hiking early for sunrise, you may pay later from home.

    • Sunset hikes are allowed even after the coffee shop is closed, as the gate remains open at all times.

    Route Details

    • Distance: 3.5 km each way (total of 7 km round trip).

    • The hike is relatively easy and takes about 45 minutes each way, though most people take 2.5 to 3 hours including photo stops.

    • Note: The path along Lake Leitisvatn is currently closed for bird protection.

Bøsdalafossur waterfall

Lake Leitisvatn is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. The lake has also been named “the lake over the ocean” as the view from Trælanípan from an a particular angle functions as an optical illusion, appearing to look as though the lake is hovering directly above the ocean.

At the end of the lake is the impressive Bøsdalafossur waterfall. Bøsdalafossur is a 30m high waterfall flowing directly into the Atlantic Ocean.

Alongside otherworldly shorelines, you will also see the beautiful free standing sea stack Geituskoradrangur.

Trælanípan

Trælanípa (Slave Mountain) is a perpendicular rock wall, which juts 142 metres upwards out of the sea. It’s said that it has gotten its name from the Viking Age when slaves were pushed off the mountain.  

From Trælanípan, you can see the southernmost part of Streymoy, Hestur, Koltur, Sandoy, Skúvoy and Suðuroy.
